The 7 habits of highly effective people, principle #5. My notes on the topic:
Habit 5 is seek to understand then to be understood.
Be empathetic.
People tend to listen autobiographically, with their own story in mind, and want to share the conclusions that works for them. Instead, you should listen empathically, that is, trying to walk in the other person’s shoes. It’s sometimes enough for people to be truly listened to to fix their issues. Only after you really understand the other person’s point of view and motives should you share your story.
Carnegie / How to win friends and influence people has multiple "rules" linked to that:
- Become genuinely interested in people
- Remember people’s names and use them.
- Be a good listener, encourage people to talk about themselves.
- Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
- Always make the other person feel important, and do it sincerely
- Show respect to other people’s opinion, don’t say “you’re wrong”
- Try to honestly see things from the other person’s point of view
The rule #9 of 12 rules for life: Assume the person you’re listening knows at least something you don’t
