In naturally distributed collection of numbers, the leading digit is likely to be small. This results in a distribution of leading numbers that is a) ordered, b) looks like log(1/x)
This can be used to detect anomalies in various instances since a distribution not corresponding to Benford's law may mean that the distribution is not natural. For example: detection election fraud, tax fraud, ...
