Tape worms are parasitic worms that attach to their hosts intestines through hooks and suckers. There they live and reproduce. They absorb nutrients from Their hosts through their skin. They can grow to several feet. Their body is composed of proglottids (sections). Once a section is fertilized, it evacuates its eggs through feces. It makes its way somehow to an intermediary host, such as cows. There, eggs hatch, and make themselves available for consumption by the primary host. In that, they usually cause all sorts of trouble to the intermediary hosts but less so to their primary hosts, for which infection can easily run undetected.
Most common in north America is the beef tapeworm (taenia). It is mostly benign. Sometimes though they can migrate to other parts of the body and cause much more problems (eyes, brain)
