Motivation is a spectrum, from external to internal, and from lesser to best:
- external (someone tells you you must do something)
- introjected (you must do it because else you'll make someone sad and you don't like that)
- identified (doing because you want what the process will output) and
- intrinsic (you like the process itself).
Step 1 is figuring what you want.
