There are many symbols of the Canadian nation.
Its motto, since after WW-I is:
A mari usque ad mare (From sea to sea)
The maple leaf was first adopted by French Canadians in the 1700s.
The first flag was called the red ensign (Union jack in a square rectangleref. Canadian flag was adopted in 1965.
The coat of arms was adopted in 1921ref, red and white become official colours of Canada.
The moneys are:
- Nickel (5ct): Beaver
- Quarter : caribou
- $5 - Wilfrid Laurier (First French PM)
- $10 - John MacDonald (First PM) or Viola Desmond (Black-rights activist)
- $20 - Queen Elisabeth II
- $50 - William Lyon Mackenzie King (PM during WW-II)
- $100 - Robert Barden (PM during WW-I)
Canada has its own honours system called the Order of Canada. The highest distinction is the Victoria Cross, given for acts of bravery in face of the enemy. 96 people received it as of 2020. Notorious recipients were:
- Alexander Roberts Dunn (battle of Balaclava, first awarded)
- Filip Konowal (first born outside of Canada)
- Billy Bishop (ace pilot during WWII)
- Paul Triquet (only quebecois to receive it during WWII)
The parliament building in Ottawa is a symbol of democracy:
- completed in 1860
- 1919 - a fire destroyed the center block of Parliament
- peace tower in 1927 to commemorate WWI
- style is gothic revival
