The three discussions to help reportees grow in their career are:

  1. Life story: ask to tell the story of their life from day care on. Take notes of all changes and what motivate them in order to understand what motivates people: financial independence, prestige, ...
  2. Dreams: ask what their dream is, challenge them, especially if their dream is what you need to hear. Go beyond promotions and company. Go big. More importantly, find what they can get in your current job that can help them accomplish their dream.
  3. 18 months plan: determine what are the skills that they need to obtain to help them move the notch towards their dream.
