idea

Production (P) is what creates output.

Production Capacity (PC) is what maintains or improves the capacity to create output.

Both activities are competing for resources. Production is important to keep the lights on, production capacity is important to make production go up. Neither can be neglected, and finding the balance between each other is the key to effectiveness ; it requires awareness.

The P/PC balance is applicable to personal life, to business, and to process.

Care must be given to being effective and productive, but also to sharpening the saw (habit #7) and maintaining the production engine.

The P/PC balance is orthogonal to the core and context balance.

In the 7 habits, Covey talks about Aesop's tale, the fable of the golden gooseref:

Effectiveness lies in the balance — what I call the P/PC Balance. P stands for production of desired results, the golden eggs. PC stands for production capacity, the ability or asset that produces the golden eggs.
